Historical Background of the Uroi Hill area.

- Multi-period site
     - Bronze age settlement
     - Hallstatt (First Iron Age) settlement, fortifications and mortuary complex
     - La Tene (Dacian - Second Iron Age) settlement and fortifications
     - Roman mining settlement  ("petra"), and villa rustica
     - Late mediaeval citadel

- World War II anti-aircraft entrenchments and training trenches

- The excavation locations are located on or around the Uroi Hill, a 300m tall rock outcrop, with an escarpment on the river side and a slop on the back side. The Iron Age settlements are located on plateaus/terraces at the base of the escarpment, as are the Roman mining settlement and the WWII military trenches. The Iron Age fortifications are located below on the terraces and on the back side of the Uroi Hill. The Bronze age settlements are located below on the terraces. The is also a Bronze age and Neolithic settlement on top of the hill but this will not likely be excavated in the 2007 season. It may be surveyed.

- This archaeological site was first mentioned in reprts in 1923 by I. Martian. The current excavation project was started in 2001 by A. Balos and A. Ardeu following a salvage/investigation excavation contracted by Romtelecom. In 2003 systematic excavations began.

- Local businessmen intend to develop the touristic value of the area and in connection with this it is intended to create an archaeological park at Uroi Hill in the future.
